In addition to start-up aid, CSI provides former slaves in South Sudan with a free medical examination. We spoke with Simon Luel, a medical aid worker.
Simon Luel (left) offers medical consultations to freed slaves.
CSI: You are part of CSI’s slave liberation operations. What exactly do you do?
Simon Luel: I live and study in the city of Aweil, where I am completing a three-year training program in nursing. I deliberately moved here to support CSI’s work.
What is your job?
I help with the initial medical treatment of the freed returnees from the north.
How are the former slaves doing health-wise?
Many of them have either malaria or a lung infection. I am happy to be able to give them medication for their illnesses. In rather rare cases, I have to refer patients directly to the hospital in Aweil.
What is your personal goal?
My wish is to become a doctor to support my compatriots in this region.
