Nigeria Report

Since 2019 CSI has been advocating on behalf of Nigeria’s Christians amid escalating sectarian violence. On January 30, 2022 it issued a Genocide Warning in response to the rising tide of violence by Islamist militants. On May 20, 2022, Rhoda Ya'u Jatau, a Christian healthcare worker from Bauchi State, was arrested and jailed after being accused of blasphemy. CSI campaigned for her release for 18 months, using the hashtag #FreeRhoda. Jatau was released on bail on December 8, 2023 and was finally acquitted on December 11, 2024.

A 22-year-old Christian woman was giving birth when armed Fulani militia men stormed the rural clinic in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. She escaped, but lost her husband and four members of his family in the attack.

Nigeria: Gwoza suffers devastating attack despite presence of U.S. troops

Gwoza, in northeastern Nigeria, is reeling after a series of attacks that left dozens dead and hundreds displaced. The attacks carried out by Islamist group Boko Haram follow the deployment of U.S. troops to the area. Survivors say promised government help has not materialized.

Nigeria: President Trump intervenes, but attacks on Christians persist

Are Christians in Nigeria targeted for their religion?

Categorizing the deadly attacks as a conflict primarily over resources rather than religion is to ignore a key driver of the violence and hamper progress toward ending it.
