Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world. However, the indigenous people of the West Papua region have been Christians for generations. Through a systematic settlement of Muslims, the Indonesian government is trying to change the religious make-up of West Papua, turning its Christians into a minority in their own home. Thousands of people have fallen victim to violence and reprisals. Expulsion, arbitrary arrests, torture in prison and unfair trials are the order of the day.

CSI priorities:

Support for the Kingmi Church-run Center for Human Rights and Social and Pastoral Studies
Support for the church movement in West Papua that is working towards a non-violent solution to the conflict

Residents of bombed village mull return home

Pastor Kamena and his family had to flee from their home village of Igy when it was bombed by the Indonesian military. Like other displaced West Papuans, they settled in the provincial capital of Wamena. While the pastor wants to return home, his wife is hesitant.
